How to back up your ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini conversations
Updated · By Chatelope (Hilo Inc)
Your AI conversations live in someone else’s account. If a chat gets deleted, an account is closed, or you lose access to a work login, that history goes with it. A backup you control takes a few minutes to set up.
What a good backup looks like
- It covers every assistant you use, not just one.
- It lives somewhere you control.
- It stays current, not just a one-off snapshot.
- You can actually search it. An archive you never open doesn’t help much when you need it.
Step 1: Export from each platform
- How to export ChatGPT history: 5 steps at chatgpt.com, and the link is valid for 24 hours.
- How to export Claude history: 4 steps at claude.ai, and the link is valid for 24 hours.
- How to export Gemini history: 6 steps at takeout.google.com, and the link is valid for 7 days.
Keep the original ZIP files too. They’re the platforms’ own full-fidelity copy of your data.
Step 2: Import into Chatelope
- Sign in to Chatelope (it’s free) and open Import.
- Choose the platform the export came from.
- Upload the export you downloaded and check the preview.
- Click Import. Chatelope skips conversations it already has, so importing a newer export later only adds what’s new.
On the web your library is stored in your Chatelope account, so you can reach it from any browser. The Android app keeps conversations on your device and can back them up to your own Google Drive.
Step 3: Keep it up to date
Repeat the export every month or so and import it again. Chatelope ignores conversations it already has, so only new chats are added and nothing is duplicated.
