How to export your Gemini chat history
Updated · By Chatelope (Hilo Inc)
Google lets you download a full copy of your Gemini conversations. The export arrives by email as a download link, so it takes a few minutes of clicking and then some waiting. Here is exactly what to do, what you get, and how to make the file useful once you have it.
Export your Gemini data
Start at takeout.google.com:
- Go to takeout.google.com and sign in with the Google account you use for Gemini.
- Click Deselect all.
- Scroll down and check My Activity.
- Click All activity data included, then Deselect all in the pop-up.
- Check only Gemini Apps and click OK.
- Click Next step, keep the .zip format, and click Create export.
Google emails you a download link when the export is ready. It usually takes hours, and can take a day or two. The link stays valid for 7 days, so download it soon after it arrives.
- Don’t tick the separate “Gemini” product in the Takeout list. That exports your Gems (custom personas), not your chat history.
- Downloading your activity does not delete it from your Google account.

What’s in the export
A ZIP file. Your chats are in My Activity.html inside the My Activity › Gemini Apps folder.
The export is complete, but it is not built for reading. It is one large archive with no way to search across conversations, and it only covers this one platform.
Make the export searchable with Chatelope
Chatelope turns the archive into a searchable library you can organise with folders and tags, next to your ChatGPT and Claude history.
- Sign in to Chatelope (it’s free) and open Import.
- Choose the platform the export came from.
- Upload the export you downloaded and check the preview.
- Click Import. Chatelope skips conversations it already has, so importing a newer export later only adds what’s new.
