How to export your ChatGPT chat history
Updated · By Chatelope (Hilo Inc)
OpenAI lets you download a full copy of your ChatGPT conversations. The export arrives by email as a download link, so it takes a few minutes of clicking and then some waiting. Here is exactly what to do, what you get, and how to make the file useful once you have it.
Export your ChatGPT data
Start at chatgpt.com:
- Sign in at chatgpt.com.
- Open your profile menu and choose Settings.
- Go to Data controls.
- Next to Export data, select Export.
- Select Confirm export.
OpenAI emails you a download link when the export is ready. It usually takes minutes, but OpenAI says it can take up to 7 days. The link stays valid for 24 hours, so download it soon after it arrives.
- Export is available to signed-in Free, Go, Plus and Pro users. Business and Enterprise workspaces don’t have self-service export; ask your workspace owner.
- Download the file while signed in to the same account that requested it.

What’s in the export
A ZIP file. conversations.json holds every chat, alongside an HTML copy and any files you uploaded.
The export is complete, but it is not built for reading. It is one large archive with no way to search across conversations, and it only covers this one platform.
Files inside the ChatGPT ZIP
OpenAI’s help page only says the export includes your chat history and other account data. This is what an export we examined in 2026 contained. Smaller or older accounts may have fewer files.
| File or folder | What it holds |
|---|---|
| conversations.json | Every conversation as one JSON array: title, timestamps, and the messages stored as a tree so edited prompts and regenerated answers keep their branches. |
| chat.html | The same conversations as a single web page you can open in a browser. |
| user.json | Basic account details such as your email address and plan. |
| shared_conversations.json | The conversations you created share links for. |
| message_feedback.json | Thumbs-up and thumbs-down ratings you gave to answers. |
| dalle-generations/ | Images generated in ChatGPT, as .webp files. |
| file-… and user-… files | Files and images you uploaded. Voice conversations can add a folder of audio per conversation. |
| group_chats.json, shopping.json | Present in recent exports, often empty. |
For field-by-field details, and how this compares with Claude and Gemini, see the export format reference.
Limitations to know about
- It’s all or nothing. There is no built-in option to export a single conversation or a date range.
- Business and Enterprise workspaces don’t have self-service export; OpenAI points members to their workspace owner. On Edu, export depends on admin settings.
- Deleted chats are not included. Archived chats are, marked with is_archived.
- Project names are not in the export. Chats in a project carry only an internal ID (it starts with g-p-), so you can’t tell which project they belonged to from the file alone.
- The JSON is meant for machines and has no published schema, so its layout can change between exports.
- The download link expires after 24 hours, and you must be signed in to the same account to use it.
The same job in Claude and Gemini
| ChatGPT | Claude | Gemini | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where | Settings › Data controls › Export data | Settings › Privacy › Export data | takeout.google.com › My Activity › Gemini Apps |
| Main file | conversations.json and chat.html | conversations.json (plus projects.json, memories.json, users.json) | My Activity.html |
| Link valid for | 24 hours | 24 hours | 7 days |
| Who can export | Free, Go, Plus and Pro (not Business or Enterprise self-service) | Free, Pro and Max; on Team and Enterprise only the Primary Owner | The signed-in Google account, if Gemini Apps activity was kept |
Gemini deletes Gemini Apps activity older than 18 months by default (you can change this to 3 or 36 months, or turn it off), so older Gemini chats may already be gone by the time you export.

Make the export searchable with Chatelope
Chatelope turns the archive into a searchable library you can organise with folders and tags, next to your Claude and Gemini history.
- Sign in to Chatelope (it’s free) and open Import.
- Choose the platform the export came from.
- Upload the export you downloaded and check the preview.
- Click Import. Chatelope skips conversations it already has, so importing a newer export later only adds what’s new.
